Prevar Roadshow: Central Otago
12 December 2024 - Roxburgh Council Room, 120 Scotland Street, Roxburgh.
The Future of Fruit Innovation: What’s Next?
|
Attendees will hear about the latest grower and consumer trends and how innovation, particularly in conventional and advanced breeding techniques, is creating new and exciting opportunities for the NZ apple & pear industry.
A major focal point at the forum will be the New Zealand Government’s plan to enact legislation by 2025 that enables the commercial application of gene editing technologies in agriculture and food production.
Prevar will be presenting on how Gene Editing in particular, has the potential to significantly shorten the R&D timeline for new fruit varieties that positively meet the changing needs of growers and consumers. Currently, the development of new fruit varieties can take 15-to-20 years. The forum will also be used to discuss some of the broader benefits and challenges associated with the commercial application of Gene Editing technology in the NZ apple & pear industry.
Prevar is a grower aligned, private joint venture company, focused on developing and commercialising new and innovative apple and pear varieties for licensing in New Zealand and around the world. As a major investor in the NZ apple and pear industry through their conventional genetic breeding program, which is managed in partnership with The New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Research Limited, Prevar supports the National Government’s Bill for the commercial and regulated use of Gene Editing in New Zealand.
